Our History

The YMCA mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The national YMCA history began in 1844 to answer a pressing community need. Our cause is to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

The local YMCA of Tyler, Texas association was founded on October 27, 1953 by a group of interested Tyler citizens. By 1958, the current property at 225 S. Vine in Tyler had been donated and the structure constructed. Since that time, the Tyler YMCA has operated exercise, health, fitness, childcare, and other community service programs.

In 1999, the Whitehouse city council entered into a 15-year operating contract with the Tyler YMCA to build a new branch facility called the Whitehouse Community YMCA. The new facility opened on April 30, 2001. The Whitehouse YMCA now offers many of the same programs and services as the Tyler branch.

In 2006, the Tyler swimming pool was restored and upgraded to a saline pool. The following years of 2007 and 2010 saw upgrades in wellness/fitness areas at both branches and improvements in the Tyler locker room areas.

Our YMCA facilities serve approximately 1200 membership units, representing about 3,500 individuals, a number which has doubled since 2005. The association branches serve over 500 young students each day in our after-school childcare program located at various sites in Tyler and Whitehouse, and approximately 300 young people at four community sites for our all-day summer childcare program. Both branch facilities offer youth sports programming throughout the year, as well as special events, activities, and workshops for youth and adults in the community. In 2012, the Tyler and Whitehouse YMCAs met over $100,000 in financial aid requests.

The YMCA of Tyler association depends on funds raised from individuals, foundations, and grants for budget support to provide continuing services and financial assistance requests as well as repair, restore, and remodel facilities and equipment as needed.
